Overview
Grassroots Narratives is a human-centered publication created for Sumpay Mindanao, Inc. The report documents stories from communities supported by the program.
Instead of presenting the report as a typical program document, the goal was to focus on the people behind the work. The publication highlights real experiences from community members and shows how local initiatives created change in their lives.
The project combined storytelling, photography, and editorial design to present these narratives in a clear and structured way.
The Challenge
Impact reports often contain a large amount of information. While the details are important, long reports can make it difficult for readers to stay engaged with the stories behind the work.
The challenge was to design a publication that could organize long-form content while still allowing the human stories to stand out. The report needed to guide readers through multiple narratives while keeping the layout calm, readable, and respectful to the voices being shared.
Creative Direction
The creative direction focused on keeping the stories at the center of the publication. The design needed to feel calm and structured so that the attention remained on the people and their experiences.
Instead of using heavy graphic elements, the direction emphasized strong typography, clear hierarchy, and generous spacing. Photography and quotes were given space within the layout so the stories could feel personal and authentic.
This approach allowed the report to communicate impact through narrative while maintaining a consistent visual tone across the entire publication.
Art Direction
As Art Director, I led the overall visual direction of the publication. My role included defining the visual tone of the report, structuring the editorial layout system, and guiding the hierarchy used throughout the pages.
I worked on organizing the story flow, directing how images and text interact on each spread, and ensuring that typography and layout decisions remained consistent across the entire publication. The goal was to create a clear reading experience where stories, images, and supporting content work together as a single system.
Outcome
The final publication presented the program’s impact through real community stories while keeping the report clear and easy to follow. The structured layout helped organize long narratives into a format that readers can navigate comfortably.
By combining editorial structure with human storytelling, the report allowed readers to understand both the experiences of the communities and the broader impact of the program.
